This evaluation assesses the World Bank Group’s effectiveness in supporting countries’ efforts to achieve mobility for all (including the poor, women, and disabled persons), sustainable urban transport service delivery (from the financial and environmental perspectives), and urban transport institutional development.
This past weekend, in cities around the world, events were held to remember the millions of people who have lost their lives or been seriously injured in road traffic accidents. Since 2005, when it was adopted by the United Nations, the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims has been observed on the third Sunday of November as a commemoration and a call to action to make roads safer for all who use them.
Over the past decade, the World Bank, IFC and MIGA have committed about $50 billion for operations or guarantees in the transport sector; yet inadequate operations and maintenance has remained a concern.
Transportation plays a pivotal role in the fight against poverty. Services provided by sustained investments in roads, railways, transit systems, along with ports for trade by air and water can support economic development and poverty alleviation directly, in terms of improving access and opportunities targeted to the rural poor.
