Birgit Hansl, a German national, is the Manager of the Country Programs and Economic Management Unit at the World Bank’s Independent Evaluation Group.

Her expertise lies in macroeconomic subjects, including growth, fiscal policy, institutional development, and fostering private sector growth. Birgit's professional journey has covered a diverse range of World Bank initiatives across East and South Asia, Africa, and Europe, with field assignments in Rwanda, the Russian Federation, the Philippines, and Thailand. Her extensive portfolio includes serving as the Country Manager for Thailand, Lead Economist for the Russian Federation, Program Leader for Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines, and Lead Economist at the Bank’s global Trade, Investment and Competitiveness Unit. Additionally, she has been the World Bank’s Country Economist for Northern Macedonia, Romania, Rwanda, Afghanistan, and Nepal. Prior to her start at the Bank in 2005 as part of the Young Professionals Program, Birgit's career spanned academia, the United Nations, and various multilateral and bilateral agencies. She is an alumna of the London School of Economics, holding both a Ph.D. and a Master's Degree.
