On July 1, 1973, then World Bank president Robert McNamara announced the establishment of a wholly independent unit, the Operations Evaluation Department (OED). The sole focus of the unit would be to evaluate completed projects to provide an objective assessment of their development effectiveness, contribute to learning from experience, and as an earlier circular noted, "give us a degree of conviction about the impact of what we are doing which we could obtain in no other way".

IEG is hosting a series of events to celebrate 50 years of independent evaluation at the World Bank to learn about how the independent evaluation function evolved, and how it can adapt to contribute to the goals of the evolution roadmap.

Calling All Young and Emerging Evaluators! 

The Independent Evaluation Group of the World Bank (IEG), the Global Evaluation Initiative (GEI), and EvalYouth announced a call for papers on the topic of culturally responsive evaluation in countries in the majority world. The competition aims to promote the use of culturally responsive approaches in evaluation practice.  

The competition is now closed. Please join the Future of Evaluation on April 9 to hear the announcement of the winning essay.
