Four case studies examine how the World Bank has addressed environmental concerns in large projects. These studies review pollution control operations for industries and urban areas. They evaluate projects for irrigation, power generation, and involuntary resettlement. Also discussed are mining operations and highway and rural development. Valuable lessons emerge in three key areas: environmental protection, environmental assessment and management, and Bank activities and procedures. Some lessons demonstrate the need for uniform national and state policies to protect the environment. They look at ways to enforce environmental regulations and build public support.
