Economic growth is increasingly dependent on digital technology. Early investment by the WBG focused on supporting physical infrastructure for digital technology, such as fiber optic cables, radio towers, etc. Recently, it has expanded its focus to diverse technologies and projects, including ICT-enabled services, digital entrepreneurship, digital platforms providing online public services including e-government, open data, and innovation ecosystems. However, gaps still remain in availability, affordability, and access to digital services. IEG’s evaluative focus in this area includes digital public infrastructure and e-Governance. It will collaborate closely with the WBG’s new vice presidency unit for Digital Transformation to identify additional priority areas for evaluations.
